MONTROSE, Pa. — Hello, my name is Ava Hughes, a Dairy Ambassador. I’m in 8th grade and attend the Montrose junior senior high school.
When at the Harford Fair serving yogurt parfaits I realized how many people enjoy yogurt especially topped off with some fresh fruit. At our Dairy Promotion booth we served lots of free samples of vanilla yogurt with fresh strawberries, blueberries and/or bananas.
Yogurt is a delicious and a very healthy way to start your day or enjoy it as an after school snack especially when adding some fresh fruit.
I came across some interesting facts on the internet.
- It is believed yogurt was created by accident around 5000 BC. That’s over 7000 years ago. When milk was exposed to bacteria or soured in warm temperatures what we call yogurt was formed.
- Plain yogurt can be used as a facemask. The lactic acid in the yogurt revitalizes dull, dry skin. Yogurt also contains zinc that can alleviate acne and skin inflammation.
- Americans consume over 300,000 tons of yogurt each year.
- Yogurt contains active cultures, also known as good bacteria that helps regulate food digestion.
- Just one cup of yogurt is packed with about 10 grams of protein. That’s 20% of the daily recommended protein for adults.
When visiting the grocery store may I suggest you pick up one of those large containers of vanilla or strawberry yogurt and some fresh fruit and enjoy a yogurt parfait for breakfast or as a snack anytime during your day. Yogurt is a great way to enjoy one of the recommended “three everyday of dairy” milk, cheese or yogurt.
