SHELBURNE, Vt. — The Draft Animal-Power Network is excited to offer three intensive workshops on Friday, October 4 at their 7th Draft Animal-Power Field Days event to be held this year at Shelburne Farms in Shelburne, VT from October 4-6, 2019. Friday programs run from 7:30am to 7pm. Affordable, intensive workshops offered on Friday October 4th include Draft Animal-Powered Logging, Intro to Working Draft Animals, and Training Drafts-Getting the Most from your Working Horses.
Want to become a draft animal powered logger? Draft powered forestry can be a fulfilling and profitable full time business, or a way to diversify your farming operations. Come learn how professionals run their operations. Our Friday logging and forestry intensive is designed for participants to learn specifically about the business of draft animal powered forestry. Participants who register for Intro to Working Drafts will be spend half the day learning about working with horses, and half the day with oxen. This class is designed for the true beginner that is curious about the all the different types of animals and how they are worked.
Training Draft Horses will utilize the unique setting of Shelburne Farms to work with participants who are interested in exploring the relationships they build with draft horses. Participants will be able to bring their own horses to this session and work in unison with the training teamsters, addressing a variety of topics, challenges, and rewards.
You must pre-register for intensives. Visitors not signed up for one of the intensives will be offered wagon rides in the afternoon and have the chance to walk around and view animals, see the grounds, buy food from trucks, and more. Friday also includes The World of Draft Animal-Power tours, dinner, and an obstacle course. Enjoy Sustainable Eats Food Truck & Half Baked Pizza for lunch and dinner, as well as ice cream from Lake Champlain Chocolates!
Field Days provides opportunities for young farmers, foresters, loggers, teamsters, animal owners, land owners, and other draft-animal enthusiasts to participate in educational sessions and workshops, watch demonstrations, visit with equipment suppliers and exhibitors, and connect with mentors.
Children under 10 are free. Regular attendance without intensive workshop registration is $10 (for members) or $20 (non-members) on Friday. Intensive workshops on Friday are $100.
