UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Women involved in the dairy industry will have an opportunity to learn about key production practices and to network with peers at an upcoming conference offered by Penn State Extension.
Hosted by the Penn State Extension Dairy Team, the Women in Dairy Conference will be held Dec. 3 at the Best Western Premier Hotel, 800 E. Park Drive, Harrisburg.
The event will kick off with a preconference reception from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2. On Tuesday, Dec. 3, keynote speaker Sadie Fredericks, of Blue Diamond Dairy, will deliver a talk titled, “Learning to FLY: Self-Care for Dairy Farmers.” According to Fredericks, “Learning to FLY” is about finding ways to incorporate self-care into busy lives, with practical tips for improving sleep, nutrition, movement and more.
Breakout sessions Tuesday will cover options for feeding and raising calves; the role of biotechnology in sustainable food and fiber production; balancing work and home life; management and feeding of the transition dairy cow; the cost of youngstock rearing and optimal youngstock herd size; and expanding your voice through board representation.
Tuesday afternoon sessions also will offer tips for managing stress positively and will provide an opportunity for small-group discussion. The conference will adjourn at 4 p.m.
