MADISON, Wis. — Winter wheat production in Wisconsin is forecast at 19.8 million bushels, 8 percent above last year’s 18.4 million bushels according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production report. Based on conditions as of July 1, the State’s winter wheat yield is forecast at 76.0 bushels per acre, 1.0 bushel above last year. Wisconsin winter wheat growers intend to harvest 260,000 acres for grain, up 6 percent from 2021.
Oat production is forecast at 3.97 million bushels, up 5 percent from the 3.78 million bushels produced in 2021. The expected yield is 61.0 bushels per acre, down 1.0 bushel from 2021. Wisconsin oat growers intend to harvest 65,000 acres for grain, up 4,000 acres from last year.
The forecasts in this report are based on July 1 conditions and do not reflect weather effects since that time. The next crop production forecasts, based on conditions as of August 1, will be released on August 12.
United States Summary
Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.20 billion bushels, up 2 percent from the June 1 forecast but down 6 percent from 2021. As of July 1, the United States yield is forecast at 48.0 bushels per acre, down 0.2 bushel from last month and down 2.2 bushels from last year’s average yield of 50.2 bushels per acre. Area expected to be harvested for grain or seed totals 25.0 million acres, unchanged from the Acreage report released on June 30, 2022, but down 2 percent from last year.
Oat production is forecast at 52.6 million bushels, up 32 percent from 2021. Growers expect to harvest 796,000 acres for grain, unchanged from the previous forecast and up 22 percent from 2021. Based on conditions as of July 1, the United States yield is forecast at 66.1 bushels per acre, 4.8 bushels above the 2021 average yield. A record high yield is expected in North Dakota.
