The Futurity is a nontraditional cattle show, where the animals are entered as calves, three years prior to the show. It is truly a test of the breeder’s ability to see if they can pick out their best animals before they become cows. Of the original 94 animals entered, 15 will compete to be the WHA All-Breeds Futurity champion.
New to this 33-year long event is the inclusion of breeds other than Registered Holsteins. Having an all-breeds Futurity will make it a more competitive event as all breeds have the opportunity to prove who will be the next Futurity champion.
While during most shows the exhibitors looks take second priority to the cows, during the Futurity that is not the case. Exhibitors switch out the typical white jeans and boots for ball gowns and tuxedos as they compete for best dressed awards.
This event would not be possible without three major sponsors. Compeer Financial sponsors the first place award of $1,500. The second place award is $750 sponsored by International Protein Sires. Third place receives $500 from Agropur. All of the entries get a percentage of the original entry money.
The Futurity is also a time where the dairy community can engage with consumers and promote the industry. Taking place during the Wisconsin State Fair, it is an ideal time to connect with consumers and share our dairy story. During the show, a trivia game will take place where attendees in the crowd can participate and win delicious string cheese.
