ST. PAUL — There may be snow on the ground, but you can still find lots of locally grown goodness at winter farmers markets. Thanks to high tunnels (also called hoop houses) and Deep Winter Greenhouses, farmers are able to extend their growing season. This means you can find locally grown produce that’s traditionally only available during the warmer months, in addition to classic winter market products like root crops and canned goods.
“Shoppers can expect to find locally grown produce (squash, root veggies, storage items plus microgreens), a full range of local meats (chicken/duck/goose/pork/lamb/beef), artisan breads, canned goods including pickles, jams, sauces, and salsa, and much more,” said Maple Grove Farmers Market manager, Kirsten Bansen Weigle. Maple Grove’s indoor winter market resumes on February 1 after a break for the holidays and will include Minnesota Grown members like Gardner’s Garden, Schyma’s Pickles & Preserves, Neumann Farms, and Ruter Farm Produce.
Unique Finds
Unique products such as popcorn, pastries, barbeque sauce, and soft pretzels found can be found at the Monticello indoor winter market on February 10 and March 10. While you’re there, keep an eye out for Minnesota Grown members including Pure Nature Honey, Gardner’s Garden, and Schyma’s Pickles & Preserves
Family-Friendly Experience
Many markets create an experience for shoppers including food trucks, kids’ activities, and live music. Richfield’s new indoor winter market kicks off on February 1. Each market will feature live music and a food truck. Shoppers can enjoy a hot bite to eat as they stroll through a variety of vendors including local producers and craft artisans from the annual craft boutique.
Stay Toasty Indoors
While most winter markets are inside, St Paul’s downtown market has expanded this year to two adjacent winter market venues – indoors and outdoors! Each Saturday, the indoor location features a local chef making hot food for farmers’ market customers. Be on the lookout for locally grown produce and products from Minnesota Grown members like Eicthen’s Hidden Acres, Bar 5 Meat and Poultry, Farm on Wheels, Kappers Big Red Barn, and Prairie Pride Farm.
Whether you are going for fresh healthy food, unique finds, or the experience, winter markets are the place to find a variety of locally grown produce and products. Like our Facebook page for weekly winter market highlights or search the online directory to find a winter market near you.
