MANDAN, N.D. — Producers are wrapping up planting of the 2019 spring wheat crop. Nation-wide, 93 percent of the spring wheat crop has been planted, slightly behind average. All major producing states are at least 93 percent planted, except South Dakota. Producers in South Dakota have planted only 86 percent of their acres as wet conditions have impacted the ability to get fieldwork done. Some of the intended acreage will not get planted this year. Emergence remains behind average due to the late planting and earlier cool, wet conditions. Emergence by state ranges from 60 to 73 percent, anywhere from 10-23 percentage points behind average.
Moisture conditions in most of the region remain adequate to surplus, but portions of north central and northwest North Dakota remain dry and could use precipitation. Much of the crop is in good condition. USDA’s weekly crop progress report indicates that 83 percent of the U.S. spring wheat crop is in good to excellent condition compared to 70 percent last year. There are some concerns over uneven emergence in areas. Crop condition ratings in Minnesota, Montana, and North Dakota are very high with 86 to 88 percent rated good to excellent. In South Dakota, a little over half of the crop is rated good to excellent.
Durum planting continues to progress at a below average pace. About 86 percent of the North Dakota crop is planted, compared to 94 percent last year. Just over half has emerged, about 10 percentage points behind average.
