MANDAN, N.D. — Crop condition ratings declined again this week as hot, dry conditions persisted. Thirty-seven percent of the U.S. spring wheat crop is rated in good to excellent conditions, down from 40 percent the previous week. Thirty-three percent of the crop is rated as poor to very poor, an increase from 28 percent the previous week. Conditions remain quite favorable in Minnesota and eastern North Dakota, but have dropped continuously in the remainder of North Dakota and into Montana and South Dakota. Reports have indicated that some wheat is starting to be baled due to the dry conditions. The ten day forecast indicates continued hot temperatures – low to high 90’s, with some triple digit temperatures – and limited chances of precipitation.
Crop development is a bit ahead of average with almost 60 percent of the U.S. spring wheat crop headed out. Maturity is being pushed by the hot, dry conditions and yield potential continues to be adversely affected. Percent of the crop headed out ranges from 35 percent in Montana to 92 percent in South Dakota. USDA released their Acreage report last week, providing updated planted acreage numbers. Total U.S. spring wheat acres are now estimated at 10.9 million, down 400,000 from the previous estimate. Minnesota and South Dakota showed slight increases from the March numbers, but Montana’s acreage is down 400,000 acres from March and North Dakota is down 150,000.
While durum condition ratings improved slightly in North Dakota this week, they remain well below normal. Thirty-three percent of the durum is rated good to excellent, up from 24 percent last week. Forty-four percent is rated in fair condition and 23 percent is rated poor to very poor. Half of the North Dakota durum is headed out, a bit behind last year’s pace. In Montana, durum conditions declined with only 18 percent rated in good to excellent condition, an additional 28 percent rated fair and 54 percent rated poor to very poor. Crop development is being pushed by the heat and drought and 30 percent of the Montana durum is headed out, compared to 19 percent on average. The June Acreage report showed a slight decline in durum acres from the March estimate with total U.S. acreage pegged at 1.92 million, compared to 2.0 million.
