SACRAMENTO — The economic benefits and environmental stewardship of the California almond industry will be showcased Wednesday, June 12th when the Almond Alliance of California hosts the 2019 Almond Festival at the State Capitol from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on the West Steps.
“Our goal is for law and policy makers to see, feel and understand all of the components and complexities of the California almond industry, all the great things that come from almonds and the importance of sustainability and innovation to the industry,” said Almond Alliance President Elaine Trevino. “We want to answer questions about our industry, demonstrate the work we do pertaining to reuse of all co-products and celebrate the spectrum and value of almonds which are unique to California and within the United States.”
Information about the industry’s innovations and efficiencies will be highlighted along with examples of how co-products of almonds (hulls and shells) are used in the marketplace. Booths representing almond processors and growers will feature an assortment of almond products including almonds, almond cookies, snacks, ice cream, almond milk and almond candy.
The Almond Board of California will provide information on the industry’s sustainability goals, which have been supported by decades of research funded by the Board. A reduced dust harvesting machine will be on display as well as almond co-product innovations and information about the importance of bees to the industry.
Trevino noted, “This is the first Almond Festival on the West steps of the Capitol and we want to make it fun, informative, interactive and an opportunity to build and strengthen relationships within the State Capitol. We are excited to showcase the many benefits of the California almond industry.”
The California almond industry generates approximately 104,000 jobs statewide, over 97,000 in the Central Valley, especially in areas that suffer from chronic unemployment. The industry also generates more than $21 billion in economic revenue and directly creates more than $11 billion to the size of the state’s total economy.
