MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association (WCA) President-elect Matt Ludlow joined Wisconsin Representatives Travis Tranel (R-Cuba City) and Loren Oldenburg (RViroqua) alongside State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) at the press release and hearing of their Truth in Food Labeling Legislation before the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Revenue and Financial Institutions on October 24, 2019. The bill aims to target accurate labeling for milk, meat and dairy products derived from artificial, lab-grown or plant-based sources.

WCA strongly supports Senate Bill SB 464, which addresses truth in meat labeling specifically. Ludlow attended and spoke at both the press conference and hearing on behalf of WCA in favor of the resolution for SB 464.
“The Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association fully supports the legislature’s effort to establish guidelines for the clear labeling of alternative meat products. The beef industry has spent a significant amount of time, effort, and money establishing and maintaining a wholesome, nutritious, and safe product that our farmers and ranchers work to produce every day,” Ludlow said. “SB 464 will set forth guidelines that help protect the integrity of our product and alleviate consumer confusion when purchasing plant based or cell cultured alternative proteins. We applaud the legislature’s initiative to put Wisconsin ahead of the curve when it comes to the labeling of fake meat products.”
WCA has been actively involved with this legislative effort on behalf of Wisconsin’s beef cattlemen and women. WCA President Eric Johnson also attended both the press conference and hearing. Additionally, WCA member Val Gaffney attended the hearing. Johnson and Gaffney did not speak at the hearing, but both registered in favor of SB 464.
