CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. — Women farmers and landowners interested in conservation are invited to a Women Caring for the Land workshop from 9am to 3pm on Thursday, Sept. 19 in Greenleaf. This free event is open to women who want to learn more about practices such as rotational grazing, cover crops or pollinator plantings. Women Caring for the Land events, developed with curriculum from the Women, Food and Agriculture Network (WFAN), occur around the country and offer a chance to network with other area landowners and learn about the resources available to improve land conservation.
Host farmers Maryann and Kurt Kohlmann and their daughter, Suzanne Wilson, have transitioned their farm into rotational grazing. To improve water quality on the farm, the family converted crop land into pasture to raise steers and chickens.
Registration and networking will kick off at 8:30am at Greenleaf Fireman’s Park, 1588 Fair Rd., Greenleaf. The day will begin with a learning circle led by the organizers and local conservation resource professionals, followed by a potluck lunch. Please bring a dish to pass. After lunch we’ll head to Family Roots Farm for a tour. Please dress for being outdoors and in pastures. Men are welcome to join for the farm tour portion of the day; however, it is requested that the morning learning circle space is for women only.
This is the final location in a summer series of Women Caring for the Land events organized this summer by Wisconsin Farmers Union and Pheasants Forever of Wisconsin. Partners on the Greenleaf event also include the local Natural Resources Conservation Service, Family Roots Farm, and the Lower Fox Demonstration Farms Network. Space is limited and registration will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. For more information or to register please call 715-723-5561 or go to www.wisconsinfarmersunion.com/events.
The learning circles method of conservation outreach to women farmland owners, and the activities used, were developed by Women, Food and Agriculture Network for its Women Caring for the Land program. Find other Women Caring for the Land events at https://wfan.org/women-caring-for-the-land.
