Happy Monday! Here’s to a new spot for me, Kate. I hope it works for you, it definitely is going to work out better for my schedule. No more mad dashes to the finish line late Thursday night. 🙂
I wanted to share a great question that was posed to a panel of ag industry leaders on Thursday, at the New York State Agricultural Society Annual Meeting. It stuck with me so I decided to ask the kids the question to see how they would answer, I even asked my dad too.
Here is the question. How would you answer it?
“If you could wave your magic wand, and choose one moment in farming that you could share with everyone in the world–what moment would you share?”
It was funny because the first of my children to blurt out their answer was Jacob, who is probably the least likely to work on the dairy farm every day, but who knows… Without even thinking about it he blurted out Cookie the cow. She is very special.
Sam took a touch longer to think and answer, but not much: Chopping corn in the Krone chopper.
Tyler, with great thought: That time of day when it is changing over to evening, and I am in the dump wagon waiting for loads of feed out in a field.
My father: A calf being born.
Kate: (Ahh, so many to choose from, does it have to be just one?) I would show the world a warm summer morning in the Northeast at dawn. Walking out to the barn to begin the day, just myself, a handful of crackers, in barn shorts, t-shirt, and Tingley’s. Warm air, barn swallows stirring, and the chirp of crickets waning. The beautiful scene swirls all around me as my senses awaken and I blink. It’s gone.
There is peace and moments like this everywhere in the world, every second of the day. We are just very lucky, farmers, to work in and among the most beautiful moments every day. We don’t have to wait until the weekend to be a witness.
Most of us are thankful enough to recognize and acknowledge them. How wonderful it would be if we could bottle them up and share…from our point of view. Maybe then, we could bring everyone together.
Thank you Julie for asking the question.
Please let me know what moment you would share the world if you could wave your magic wand, about farming.
Have a great week–and if you can, just hit pause, and think how you would answer this question. I think it will bring a smile to your face.
