MILFORD, Pa. — A webinar on Estrogen Occurrence and Persistence in Vernal Pools Impacted by Wastewater Irrigation Practices will be held on Oct. 25 from noon to 1 p.m.
The Pennsylvania State University has spray-irrigated its treated wastewater effluent via land application since the early 1980s. In this study, researchers explored the impacts of spray irrigation on nearby temporary wetlands, also known as vernal pools. The researchers quantified the occurrence and persistence of estrogens in three vernal pools during an eight week period that coincided with the development period of native amphibian larvae.
Estrogens were detected in nearly 100 percent of the vernal pool samples collected throughout the study period. The findings of this research have important implications for management practices that can help protect these critical habitats. Dr. Odette Mina, the Managing Director of the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Laboratories at The Pennsylvania State University, will present this webinar.
