BUFFALO, Mo. — The University of Missouri Extension will be holding a Warm Season Grass Pasture Tour on Tuesday July 31st. The event will be held at the Ron Locke farm on State Road V near Long Lane. From Buffalo, take highway 32 east, toward Long Lane to V. The farm is approximately ¾ a mile south of 32 on the west side of the road. We will start the tour at 6:30 p. m. and finish around 8:00 p. m.
MU Extension Agronomy Specialists Terry Halleran and Pat Miller will discuss establishment practices, management and identification of the various warm season grasses. MU Extension Livestock Specialists Patrick Davis and Andy McCorkill will be discussing the nutritive value of the forages and how to utilize them for beef cattle. Mark Green with NRCS will be available to discuss cost share programs related to grazing systems and warm season grasses. Ron Locke, Farm owner/operator will be sharing his perspective about the process of establishing warm season grasses and how they have helped him with his grazing operation.
Locke has been on a mission to eradicate KY31 fescue on his farm and convert pastures to other forage options for well over a decade. He has been an outspoken advocate of not only native warm seasons but also making the conversion to novel endophyte fescue varieties. Warm season forages offer an option to cool seasons such as fescue for summer grazing. This summer in particular, the native warm seasons have really shined; they take the heat and dry weather in stride and continue to grow in the months that fescue slows down because of the heat.
Please register for the tour by July 30th. To register for the tour or for more information, contact the Dallas County MU Extension Center at 417 – 345 – 7551. This tour is part of the NRCS + MU Grasslands Project.
