CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Walnut Council will hold their annual meeting July 24-27 on the Southern Illinois University campus in Carbondale, Ill. With the theme “Returning to our Roots,” the meeting will feature a field tour of short- and long-term studies on hardwood management, landowner sessions, and multiple days of technical presentations.
“The Walnut Council originated as a loosely knit association of industry representatives, scientists, resource personnel, and landowners in the early 1970’s to address the decline in quality hardwood timber, especially black walnut, for the furniture and veneer industries,” according to John Katzke, WC President. “It has become the leading organization for professionals and tree farmers to share information for establishment and managing hardwoods for high quality veneer and sawlogs in the eastern United States. Although emphasis was initially on black walnut, the Walnut Council now includes other eastern hardwoods: butternut, red and white oaks, and black cherry. The program for this year’s annual meeting is a good example of our expanded efforts to increase and manage our hardwood resource.”
