MILLBROOK, N.Y. — The 171st Dutchess County Fair has arrived! Come stop by Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County (CCEDC)’s exhibits at the Dutchess County Fair, including the 4-H’ers and their projects. The Dutchess County 4-H Youth Development program has approximately 450 members, the majority of which will have their projects on display at the Fair, totaling around 2,500 exhibits! The first official show of the Fair starts at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, August 23rd, where the Horse members will ride in over 50 classes. Check the Fair schedule, at www.dutchessfair.com, to see the show schedule for the rest of the week.
Don’t miss the 4-H Livestock Sale on Saturday at 4:00 PM. Dutchess County 4-H’ers raise their animals and promote their own sale, learning valuable life and business lessons. The public is invited to bid at the Livestock Sale and participate in the ultimate “farm to table” experience. We invite you to the pre-sale Reception at 2:00 PM in the Livestock Show Arena.
Interested in the history of the 4-H program and agriculture in Dutchess County? Be sure to stop in the 4-H Exhibit Hall anytime throughout the week to check out the timeline the Dutchess County Teen Ambassadors have created, detailing the program from the 1920’s to the present.
The Agriculture and Horticulture Program will also be at the 2016 Dutchess County Fair. Come stop by displays on home composting and recycling, located in the Horticulture Building, where you can learn more about starting your own compost system at home; how to troubleshoot common composting issues; and what you can and cannot recycle in Dutchess County. Have any burning questions about gardening? The Master Gardener volunteers will also be stationing their “Ask a Master Gardener” booth in the Horticulture Building. Master Gardener volunteers will be there to answer your questions and provide tips on gardening.
Lastly, the Environment and Energy Program will also have exhibits on stormwater management and energy efficiency, also in the Horticulture Building. Come try out our question wheel and see how much you know about stormwater management – or see how much money you can save by buying more energy efficient light bulbs, like compact florescent light bulbs and LED light bulbs.
The Dutchess County Fair, the second largest county fair in New York State, will take place from August 23, 2016 to August 28, 2016. For more information on the Fair, including hours, rates and daily schedule, visit www.dutchessfair.com.
