GALVA and HASTINGS, Iowa — Farmers Sam Bennett of Galva and Jon Bakehouse of Hastings will host a virtual field day with Practical Farmers of Iowa exploring findings from their on-farm research looking at the impacts of waiting to terminate cereal rye in soybeans on Wednesday, June 17, from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
The event – “Termination Dates for Cereal Rye in Soybeans” – is free to attend and will take place on Zoom. To join in, visit practicalfarmers.org/field-days and click the link found on the page for this event.
Sam and his wife, Danielle, raise corn, soybeans and small grains on a third of the Bennett family’s 2,000-acre operation near Galva. They use cover crops, no-till and strip-till to work toward their goals of improving soil health, conservation, nutrient management, water quality and creating habitat.
Jon is a lifetime member of PFI who farms at Maple Edge Farm with his wife Tina, son Anderson and parents near Hastings. They raise corn and soybeans and are integrating goats for grazing with their small cow-calf herd.
Both Sam and Jon have both participated in on-farm research through Practical Farmers’ Cooperators’ Program looking at the impacts of delaying cereal rye termination in soybeans.
During the field day, Sam and Jon will discuss:
- what they found from trials investigating delayed termination of cereal rye in soybeans
- how their original research questions evolved into an on-going trial looking at the impact of leaving a cereal rye cover crop to re-seed itself before corn
- what motivates them to conduct on-farm research
This event is part of Practical Farmers’ 2020 field day season, which includes more than 60 virtual events hosted by farmers located across the state, and beyond, on topics spanning the agricultural spectrum.
New this year, we have planned several event series that will let participants check in with certain farmer hosts throughout the season to learn about different facets of farm management. All of these events are free and offered a la carte: guests are welcome to attend all events in the series or pick the ones they’re most interested in.
