RICHMOND, Va. — Farmers in Virginia intend to plant 490,000 acres of corn, 5,000 acres more than 2018. U.S. corn growers intend to plant 92.8 million acres for all purposes in 2019, 4 percent more than last year and 3 percent more than 2017.
Soybean acreage in Virginia is expected to total 590,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from the previous year. U.S. soybean planted area for 2019 is estimated at 84.6 million acres, down 5 percent from last year.
Upland cotton acreage to be planted in Virginia is forecast at 100,000, up 2,000 acres from 2018. The U.S. total upland cotton acreage is estimated at 13.5 million acres, down 2 percent from the previous year.
Peanut acreage in Virginia is expected to total 24,000 acres, unchanged from the previous year. U.S. peanut planted area for 2019 is estimated at 1.45 million acres, up 2 percent from last year.
Flue-cured tobacco growers in Virginia intend to set 17,000 acres, down 4,000 acres from 2018. For flue-cured producing states, growers intend to set 165,000 acres, down 32,800 acres from last year.
Producers intend to set 240 acres of dark-fired tobacco in Virginia, down 40 acres from the previous year. Acreage set to burley tobacco was estimated at 700 acres, down 300 acres from 2018.
Barley seeded by Virginia farmers in the fall of 2018 totaled 20,000 acres, down 10,000 acres from previous year. U.S. seeded acreage was 2.55 million acres, up slightly from 2017.
Winter wheat seeded by Virginia farmers in the fall of 2018 totaled 180,000 acres, down 50,000 acres from previous year. Seeded acreage for the nation was 31.5 million acres, down 3 percent from 2017.
Farmers in the state intend to harvest 1.14 million acres of all hay, down slightly from 2018. U.S. farmers intend on harvesting 53.1 million acres of hay in 2019, up slightly from last year.
