OLYMPIA, Wash. — USDA NASS released crop production forecasts for the Northwest Region.
Canola
Washington canola production is forecast at 231 million pounds, up 62 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 130,000 acres, is unchanged from 2021. Yield is expected to be 1,780 pounds per acre, up 680 pounds from 2021.
Corn for Grain
Production of corn for grain in Idaho is forecast at 21.0 million bushels, down 17 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 105,000 acres, is down 15,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 200 bushels per acre, down 10.0 bushels from 2021. Washington corn for grain production is forecast at 16.8 million bushels, down 20 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 70,000 acres, is down 15,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 240 bushels per acre, down 8.0 bushels from the previous year.
Dry Edible Beans
Idaho dry bean production is forecast at 1.04 million cwt., down 30 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 45,000 acres, is down 12,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 23.0 cwt per acre, down 3.1 cwt from 2021. Washington dry bean production is forecast at 663,000 cwt, down 39 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 25,500 acres, is down 14,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 26.0 cwt per acre, down 1.7 cwt from 2021.
Sugarbeets
Production of sugarbeets in Idaho is forecast at 6.63 million tons, down 1 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 170,000 acres, is unchanged from 2021. Yield is expected to be 39.0 tons per acre, down 0.5 tons from 2021. Oregon sugarbeet production is forecast at 303,000 tons, down 23 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 8,000 acres, is down 2,400 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 37.9 tons per acre, unchanged from the previous year. Washington sugarbeet production is forecast at 91,000 tons, up 5 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 2,000 acres, is up 100 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 45.5 tons per acre, down 0.4 ton from 2021.
Alfalfa Hay
Based on October 1, 2022 conditions, production of alfalfa hay in Idaho is forecast at 4.40 million tons, up 12 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 1.00 million acres, is up 40,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 4.40 tons per acre, up 0.3 ton from 2021. Oregon alfalfa hay production is forecast at 1.55 million tons, up 14 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 370,000 acres, is down 30,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 4.20 tons per acre, up 0.8 ton from the previous year. Washington alfalfa hay production is forecast at 1.64 million tons, down 9 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 390,000 acres, is unchanged from 2021. Yield is expected to be 4.20 tons per acre, down 0.4 ton from the previous year.
All Other Hay
Production of other hay in Idaho is forecast at 754,000 tons, up 22 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 290,000 acres, is up 10,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 2.60 tons per acre, up 0.4 ton from 2021. Oregon other hay production is forecast at 1.38 million tons, up 28 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 600,000 acres, is up 110,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 2.30 tons per acre, up 0.1 tons from previous year. Washington other hay production is forecast at 840,000 tons, up 9 percent from last year. Harvested area, at 350,000 acres, is up 30,000 acres from 2021. Yield is expected to be 2.40 tons per acre, unchanged from the previous year.
