SACRAMENTO — The California State Board of Food and Agriculture will hear updates on local implementation of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) as it relates to groundwater sustainability plans. State and local agencies, along with representatives from non-profit organizations, will provide perspectives on local implementation and impacts. The Board will also hear about federal funding opportunities related to climate and local food purchasing. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. via GoToWebinar.

“Groundwater sustainability plans are critical for local management of our water resources and in building long term resilience for communities, the environment and California’s farmers and ranchers,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross.
Invited speakers include: Paul Gosselin, California Department of Water Resources; Ngoodo Atume, Clean Water Action; Aaron Fukuda, Tulare Irrigation District; Matthew Hurley, McMullin Area Groundwater Sustainability Agency; Derek Kirk, Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development; Virginia Jameson, California Department of Food and Agriculture and other invited speakers.
“As a member of a groundwater sustainability agency and a farmer – I understand the difficult challenges we have ahead in implementing SGMA,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “Ensuring local agencies have the resources and assistance to implement these plans is crucial. This assistance can support efforts to keep farmland in production and help to minimize economic impacts to rural communities.”
The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
