ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — University of Maryland Extension and Maryland Dairy will be holding a Dairy Field Day from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 13.
The program will begin with introductory statements followed by a presentation on dairy economics given by Dale Johnson, UME farm management specialist. At 11, Dr. Amanda Grev, UME forage and pasture management specialist, and Jeff Semler, Washington County Extension educator will discuss the effect of soil fertility on triticale quality and yield.
Dr. Sarah Potts, UME dairy and beef specialist, will go over the what, when, and how of colostrum management. Rachael Slattery, dairy-beef Extension activities coordinator, will talk about the beef on dairy project.
Following lunch, Dr. Sarah Potts, a UME Dairy and Beef Specialist, and Dr. Amanda Grev, a UME Forage and Pasture Specialist will consider the impact of improved pasture management on pregnant Holstein heifers. The program will conclude with an overview of research on cannulated cows, given by Jarvis Scott, animal avian sciences graduate student, and Dr. Rick Kohn, UMD professor of animal and avian sciences.
