WATERTOWN, N.Y. — According to the CDC, “The workplace is an important setting for health protection, health promotion and disease prevention programs. On average, Americans working full-time spend more than one-third of their day, five days per week at the workplace…The use of effective workplace programs and policies can reduce health risks and improve the quality of life for American workers.” Policy not only clarifies the rules and expectations of an organization but it also reflects the standards and values of the worksite’s culture. This is as true of worksite wellness as any other facet of business. Many businesses and organizations have begun implementing worksite wellness programs but shy away from taking the next step in turning best practices into policy. Those that do adopt wellness policies may overlook important follow-up steps such as communication and education to ensure that all employees are aware of the policy and understand its implications both personally and professionally. Find out how your workplace can effectively implement a comprehensive wellness policy on June 6th from 12-2 at Cornell Cooperative Extension in Watertown, NY.
The Adopting Healthy Habits Community Coalition has hosted a series of monthly worksite wellness workshops for local businesses and organizations all spring. The final workshop on June 6th, entitled Creating a Comprehensive Wellness Policy, will feature speakers from several local organizations including WIC, CCE, Satayana Yoga, Credo, and the St. Lawrence County Health Initiative. Like the previous workshops, this final free workshop will also include a free healthy lunch from event sponsor Fidelis Care, a local health plan that provides quality, affordable health insurance to more than 1.7 million New York State residents. “As a mission-driven health plan, our dedication to help individuals and families in the North Country access quality, affordable health coverage is a priority, and one that makes our partnership with the Adopting Healthy Habits Community Coalition so important,” said Fidelis Care Chief Marketing Officer Pam Hassen. “Fidelis Care Representatives will be on-site throughout the worksite wellness series to help residents learn more about their coverage options for themselves and their families.”
To date, nearly 50 participants, representing over 20 local businesses and organizations, have attended the workshops and the feedback has been extremely positive. The final workshop on June 6 will wrap up the series with turning best wellness practices into policy. Each free workshop includes an array of local speakers, take-home resources, a delicious healthy lunch, and an activity break led by a community fitness leader. Whether your business has never had a worksite wellness program and wants to get started, or you have a program in place but need new ways to stay motivated, the Adopting Healthy Habits Community Coalition can help. We work to make the North Country a healthier place to live, work and play by helping local groups, community leaders, and organizations create policies, practices and environments to make healthy lifestyles the easy choice.
