HARRISBURG, Pa. — PA Sustainable Agriculture and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation invite media to attend and learn more about silvopasture at a Forage and Forest Tour – Third-Year Silvopasture on August 27.
Silvopasture, the thoughtful integration of forages, livestock, and trees on pasture, allows graziers to add shade for their herd, slow winter winds, fix nitrogen in the soil, and increase feed at critical times of the year. It can also protect nearby waterways, increase biodiversity, and create new sources of revenue.
Fiddle Creek Dairy began developing silvopasture systems on their farm in 2019. Working in partnership with an agroforestry consultant and a nonprofit, they’ve planted over 3,000 trees in their pasture to date.
The tour revisits Fiddle Creek’s silvopasture, now in its third year. Fiddle Creek is one of five farms participating in a three-year study of silvopasture being conducted by the CBF.
After the presentation, there will be a tour of the pasture and a complimentary lunch at the farm.
