BISMARCK — Tonight, marks probably the biggest speech of President Trump’s first year in office; the State of the Union address, where he looks back at his first year, and hopefully gives us a look forward to the following year.
Everyone probably wants to hear something a little different from this president tonight, but at NDFB one thing is for sure, remind the citizens of the United States, how you helped protect freedom, opportunity and self-reliance. And for us, we want to hear how you’re going to enhance those same things into the following year.
You know it might be reminding the folks of the positives of the tax bill: many companies doing positive things. I think that needs to be part of the big stage tonight. Also, regulations. Do we believe in people being able to fend for themselves and provide for themselves, or do we believe that big brother has to be looking over our shoulder? Those are the things that are important to preserving that freedom, opportunity and self-reliance.
And the other thing that I think we have to address as patriots of the United States of America, is certain elected leaders thinking it’s fine to just skip out on the State of the Union address because you don’t agree with the sitting president.
There’s a lot of times many of us haven’t agreed with sitting presidents in the past. But we still listened. Because we want to hear it first-hand. And see the reaction first-hand. And more than wanting to, when you’re an elected official, you have an obligation to the people that elected you to participate in those big moments in our country. And our State of the Union address by a sitting president is exactly one of those big moments.
So to everyone out there, I say, “Think about what you want to hear from the president – in the past year, in the year coming ahead – to make a difference in the life of your family.”
