ITHACA, N.Y. — The Local Farmers Union formed when 3 farmers started a jam in 2015 at a Taco Tuesday in Homer, NY. This wasn’t a jam made with fresh local strawberries or blueberries though, but with guitars, mandolins, and bass.
They went from from picking veggies by day to pickin’ and grinnin’ by night. The rotating cast of farmers has since been joined by chefs, scientists, and sympathizers. They started out finding some common ground in the music of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Grateful Dead, and after some time spent jamming together, the seeds were planted for some original tunes, inspired by their day jobs.
Now they are New York’s premier Veggie Folk-Rock Band, playing quirky plant-based originals and eclectic covers at festivals, breweries, and porches across Central New York. And those seeds of originals tunes have been harvested in a full length debut album, Kale-In-It. Featuring plant based tunes like “Turnip the Beet”, “Guacamole”, and “Know Your Farmer”, Kale-It-In is sure to sprout a shimmy in your hips, and tickle your funny bone too.
Recorded at Studio Zoot in Ithaca, NY, Kale-In-It features a line-up of Local Farmers Union founders Bob Cat (mandolin, guitar, and vocals) and Bret Morris (upright and electric bass), joined by Elias Kushner (percussion and vocals), Nate Funke (acoustic guitar, vocals), with special guests Justin Olson (harmonica, vocals), Peter Blanchard (keys, bass, and vocals), and Jimmy Hearn (electric guitar).
