FORT PIERCE, Fla. — The public is invited to a Culinary Cook-Off as the Sunshine Kitchen hosts a student cooking challenge on Thursday, Sept. 26, starting at 3 p.m. for a chance to win a $1,500 scholarship.
Presented by the Treasure Coast Education and Research Development Authority, this student cooking contest will pair Indian River State College students with St. Lucie Public School students as they compete for $1,500 in scholarship funds. Prep work will begin at 3 p.m.; cooking starts at 3:30 p.m. and judging will take place at 4:30 p.m. with awards being presented at 5:30 p.m.
The categories/winning divisions included:
- Plate Appearance
- Proper Cooking Procedures
- Knife Skills
- Degree of Difficulty
- Sanitation/Food Safety
Two students will be awarded $1,500 scholarships with funding coming from the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners. Scholarships will be paid to the St. Lucie County Public Schools’ Education Foundation and IRSC Education Foundation.
Students were selected based on their length of time in the St. Lucie Public Schools’ culinary program and their desire to further there culinary education. Other criteria included those working in the food industry and availability.
Judging for the competition will be handled by Chef Jacques Larsen, executive chef at the Monarch Country Club in Palm City; Chef Jason Venazio, owner of Muscle Chef Meals (meal prep company and client of Sunshine Kitchen; and Chef Jimmy Freitas, owner Bonner Mobile Bar and Rusty Putter at Fairwinds Golf Course.
The public is invited to attend and enjoy this free event. Refreshments will be provided by middle school students enrolled in culinary programs through the St. Lucie Public School District. Those interested in attending should RSVP to email@example.com or call 772-467-3107 by Friday, Sept. 20.
