URBANA, Ill. — More than 450 first-year FFA members from 47 chapters in Illinois attended the University of Illinois Greenhand Leadership Conference on September 20, 2017.
First year FFA members, also known as Greenhands, participated in a series of three hands-on workshops which addressed goal setting, personal growth, and community service. Students were encouraged to view their membership in the FFA organization as an opportunity to improve upon their individual strengths and leadership skills. The workshops focused on the conference theme of “Climb: Step, Summit, Soar”.
Harley Carlson, agricultural science education junior and 2017 Conference Coordinator, along with her committee, organized and trained nearly 60 university student volunteers to facilitate workshops and organize logistics for the event. The university student volunteers were representatives of the University of Illinois Agricultural Education Program, Collegiate FFA, and Ag Ed Club.
