HUDSON, N.Y. — School districts that participated in 2017’s “eggsellent”4-H program were Hudson, Athens, Taconic Hills, and Chatham. Over 380 students in grades one through three spent 21 days learning all about the importance of incubation and embryology. Teachers and students participated in this great hands-on science activity and physically watched the transformation of embryo to chick. They were able to explore and learn all about the life cycle, a vital curriculum in their grade levels, through the world of feathers!
Classrooms were provided with everything needed in incubating and brooding their classroom flock. Teachers were given a binder of activities and materials that provide additional learning outside of the program’s three classroom visits with an educator. This program was made possible through partial funding from Columbia County Fair’s Harvest Hall and the Athens Community Foundation. School districts also procured local funding to ensure their participation. If your school district or classroom is interested in taking part in the hatching madness in 2018 please don’t hesitate to contact us. For more information on this program please contact Margaret M. Smith, Extension Educator, at 828-3346 x201 or mms426@cornell.edu.
