BEDFORD, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Beef Council and the Northeast Dairy Beef Quality Assurance Program recently helped to fund stockmanship expert Curt Pate to present at the Professional Dairy Managers of Pennsylvania Summer Summit. This year, Summer Summit was held at Schrack Farms in Loganton, Pa. There were over 100 participants in this years program.
The event was focused on dairy management, with presentations focused on immigrant labor, soil health and stewardship and stockmanship. Pate drew a standing room only crowd for his final session, with many farm and herd managers in the audience. His key messages focused on how cattle use their eyes to visualize the people around them and how human interaction creates pressure on them, ultimately teaching cattle where to move.
“The three main types of pressure when working cattle are drive, draw and maintain,” Pate said. “Each pressure type is important, knowing when to use each one is what creates a good stockman.”
Participants who attended the breakout session with Pate received a certificate for completion of their stockmanship training, to be used in their FARM 3.0 protocol binder.
