JEFFERSON CO., N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) is hosting a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Day Camp to be held at Lyme Central School, July 31-Aug. 4th from 9am to 3pm daily. The camp targets students entering 5th through 8th grades. The camp will focus on a different STEM area each day. Topics include, earth science, drone technology, animal science and forensic science. Approximately 100 students will be in attendance. “Youth will have the opportunity to participate in fun educational hands-on activities while connecting what they learn to opportunities available in STEM career fields,” said Rochelle Runge, one of the camps organizers from Cornell Cooperative Extension.
The camp is funded by the RISE (Rural Initiate for STEM Excellence) Grant. The Fort Drum RISE Grant works to enhance STEM achievement of all students in the consortium, which includes the 6 smallest, most rural schools serving Fort Drum, Copenhagen, Alexandria Bay, Belleville Henderson, LaFargeville, Lyme and Sackets Harbor. RISE offers enhanced educational opportunities for students in STEM areas and supports them as they transition to college and career. Additionally, RISE provides professional development opportunities for teachers. For more information on RISE visit fortdrumrise.org/.
CCE educates youth, families, farmers and communities using research-based knowledge for practical application and lifelong learning. One of the ways CCE works with youth is through its 4-H programming. The fundamental 4-H ideal of practical, learn-by-doing experiences encourages youth to experiment, innovate, and think independently. Youth learn leadership, citizenship, and life skills through more than 1,000 projects with topics as varied as rocketry, GPS mapping, DNA analysis, public speaking, photography, nutrition, and community service.
