UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s Ag Progress Days offers many activities to entice producers to make the trip to the Russell E. Larson Agricultural Research Center at Pennsylvania Furnace and enjoy a day of learning while interacting with their peers and faculty and staff from Penn State’s Department of Animal Science.
Two highlights for dairy producers include a Dairy Industry Breakfast being jointly hosted by Penn State Extension and the Center for Dairy Excellence and a tour of Penn State Dairy Barns.
The breakfast, free to dairy producers and agribusiness representatives, will be held on Aug. 15 from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Red Barn on the Ag Progress Days site. The focus will be “Thriving with Change,” and will offer insights into the final results of the dairy survey conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture with a look at what the future of the dairy industry in Pennsylvania may look like.
Abbie Spackman, Department of Agricultural Economics, will speak about managing stress as producers deal with many aspects of dairy farming that are beyond a farmer’s control – market prices, government regulations, drought, disease outbreak and others.
Rob Goodling, Penn State Extension Educator, will discuss “Knowing Your Numbers” to help producers understand the importance of knowing cost of production and how that cost affects major decisions on a farm. Finding the balance between income and expenses to properly assess any potential bottlenecks is vital to a successful operation.
The event will take place in the downstairs section of the Little Red Barn that is located on-site. There is no cost to attend, but participants interested in attending should preregister for an accurate meal count. Deadline for registering is Aug. 8.
The Dairy Tour will be Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon, and will leave from the corn crib area. It is open to all dairy producers and agri-business professionals.
Penn State Dairy professors will talk about current research projects involving calves, nutrition and reproduction, helping to bring an understanding of how this research can benefit producers.
Space is limited and registration is required for this event by 3 p.m. on Aug. 15. Please arrive 15 minutes early.
