ATHENS, Ga. — In 2021, the Nation’s production for the 26 estimated vegetable and melon crops totaled 679 million cwt, down 4 percent from 2020. In terms of total production, the three largest crops were tomatoes, onions, and sweet corn, which combined accounted for 53 percent of the all vegetables total. The value of utilized production for 2021 vegetable crops was $12.7 billion, down 10 percent from the previous year. Tomatoes, Romaine lettuce, and Onions claimed the highest values, accounting for 28 percent of the utilized value of production when combined.
Key findings for the Southern Region from the Vegetables 2021 Summary include:
Florida: Tomato production in 2021 totaled 693 million pounds, down 4 percent from 2020. The value of utilized production for tomatoes at $324 million, was down 35 percent from last year. Sweet corn production in 2021 totaled 375 million pounds, down 5 percent from 2020. The value of utilized production for sweet corn at $208 million, was up 35 percent from last year.
Georgia: Onion production in 2021 totaled 313 million pounds, up 25 percent from 2020. The value of utilized production for onions at $143 million, was up 32 percent from last year. Sweet corn production in 2021 totaled 346 million pounds, up 37 percent from 2020. The value of utilized production for sweet corn at $125 million, was down 14 percent from last year.
South Carolina: Watermelon production in 2021 totaled 133 million pounds, down 10 percent from 2020. The value of utilized production for watermelons at $17.8 million, was down 34 percent from last year.
