ATHENS, Ga. — United States winter wheat production is forecast at 1.17 billion bushels, down 8 percent from 2021. As of May 1, the yield is forecast at 47.9 bushels per acre, down 2.3 bushels from last year. State level data for Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina will be released in the September Small Grains Summary.
United States Hay Stocks Down 7 Percent
All hay stored on United States farms as of May 1, 2022, totaled 16.8 million tons, down 7 percent from the previous May. Disappearance from December 1, 2021 – May 1, 2022, totaled 62.2 million tons, down 6 percent from the same period a year earlier.
United States 2021 Cotton Ginnings Up 20 Percent
A total of 17.1 million running bales were ginned during the 2021 season, up 20 percent from last season. There were 510 active cotton gins, up from the 509 gins that operated in 2020. Sixty-four percent of the gins processed more than 20,000 running bales compared with 53 percent the previous season.
