ATHENS, Ga. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) estimates corn planted area for all purposes in 2021 at 92.7 million acres, up 2 percent or 1.87 million acres from last year. Soybean planted area for 2021 is estimated at 87.6 million acres, up 5 percent from last year. All cotton planted area for 2021 is estimated at 11.7 million acres, down 3 percent from last year. All wheat planted area for 2021 is estimated at 46.7 million acres, up 5 percent from 2020. This represents the fourth lowest all wheat planted area since records began in 1919.
Key findings for the Southern Region released in the Acreage Report
Alabama: Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 350,000 acres, up 6 percent from 2020. Cotton planted area, at 410,000 acres, is down 9 percent from 2020 while peanuts are down 3 percent at 180,000 acres. Soybean planted area is estimated at 320,000 acres, up 14 percent from last year. Winter wheat planted area, at 200,000 acres, is up 48 percent from 2020.
Florida: Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 100,000 acres, unchanged from 2020. Cotton planted area, at 90,000 acres, is down 8 percent from 2020 while peanuts are unchanged from 2020 at 175,000 acres.
Georgia: Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 460,000 acres, up 10 percent from 2020. Cotton planted area, at 1.20 million acres, is up less than 1 percent from 2020. Peanuts, estimated at 830,000 acres, are up 2 percent from 2020. Soybean planted area is estimated at 130,000 acres, up 30 percent from last year. Tobacco harvested area, at 8,500 acres, is up 8 percent from the previous year. Winter wheat planted area, at 220,000 acres, is up 16 percent from 2020.
South Carolina: Corn planted for all purposes is estimated at 430,000 acres, up 8 percent from 2020. Cotton planted area, at 200,000 acres, is up 5 percent from 2020 while peanuts are down 24 percent from a year ago at 65,000 acres. Soybean planted area is estimated at 390,000 acres, up 26 percent from last year. Tobacco harvested area, at 9,000 acres, is up 50 percent from the previous year. Winter wheat planted area, at 130,000 acres, is up 18 percent from 2020.
