ATHENS, Ga. — The estimates in this report are based primarily on the December 2020 Agricultural Survey which was conducted during the first two weeks of December. The estimates provided reflect planted and harvested acreage and yield and production for the 2020 growing season.
Alabama: Corn for grain production in 2020 totaled 50.6 million bushels, up 13 percent from 2019. With a decline in acreage and hurricane damage, cotton production, at 735,000 bales, was down 29 percent from the previous year. Peanut production totaled 637 million pounds, up 22 percent from 2019. Soybean production, at 11.3 million bushels, was up 20 percent.
Florida: Corn for grain production for 2020 totaled 8.42 million bushels, down 3 percent from 2019. As a result of damage from two hurricanes, cotton production, at 125,000 bales, was down 39 percent from the previous year. Peanut production totaled 561 million pounds, a decrease of 5 percent from 2019. Sugarcane for sugar and seed production, at 18.2 million tons, was up 3 percent from 2019.
Georgia: Corn for grain production totaled 70.2 million bushels, an increase of 25 percent from 2019, mainly due to a record high 180 bushels per acre year in 2020. Cotton production, at 2.18 million bales, was down 20 percent from 2019 due primarily to a drop in planted acreage. Conversely, peanut production, at 3.28 billion pounds, was up 19 percent from 2019 due to an increase in planted acreage. Soybean production, at 3.90 million bushels, was up 56 percent from the previous year due to a 12 bushel increase in yield compared with 2019. With tobacco harvested acres at the lowest level since 1918, production in 2020 totaled 19.3 million pounds.
South Carolina: Corn for grain production totaled 50.2 million bushels, an increase of 35 percent from 2019, mainly due to a 26 bushel increase in yield compared with 2019. With a large drop in acreage in 2020, cotton production, at 300,000 bales, was down 40 percent from the previous year. Peanut production, at 279 million pounds, was up 18 percent from 2019. With a 9 bushel increase in yield compared with the previous year, soybean production, at 10.5 million bushels, was up 28 percent from 2019. With tobacco harvested at 6,000 acres, the lowest level since 1892, production in 2020 totaled 8.4 million pounds, the lowest since 1894.
