ATHENS, Ga. — Cotton production in the US is forecast at 20.2 million 480-pounds bales, down 3 percent from November. Sugarcane for sugar and seed is forecast at 32.7 million tons, down 5 percent from last year.
Key findings for the Southern Region from the December Crop Production report
Alabama: Cotton production is forecast at 1.10 million bales, up 2 percent from last month and up 24 percent from 2018. If realized, this will be the highest production for the state since 1948. Yield is forecast at 987 pounds per acre, one pound shy of the record high set in 2016.
Florida: Cotton production is forecast at 205,000 bales, down 5 percent from last month but nearly double last year’s production which was devastated by Hurricane Michael. Sugarcane production is forecast at 17.4 million tons, up 1 percent from 2018.
Georgia: Cotton production is forecast at 2.60 million bales, down 4 percent from last month but up 33 percent from last year’s hurricane damaged crop. Pecan production is forecast at 67 million pounds, down 4 percent from last year.
South Carolina: Cotton production is forecast at 500,000 bales, unchanged from last month but up 19 percent from 2018’s crop which was damaged by Hurricanes Florence and Michael.
