Southern region annual crop production report

Cotton production in Florida up 42 percent from last year

ATHENS, Ga. — The estimates in this report are based primarily on the December 2022 Agricultural Survey which was conducted during the first two weeks of December. The estimates provided reflect planted and harvested acreage, and yield and production for the 2022 growing season. We thank all the farm operators who responded throughout the year to quarterly Agricultural Surveys, monthly Agricultural Yield Surveys and those who permitted Cotton Objective Yield measurements to be taken in their fields.

Alabama: Corn for grain production in 2022 totaled 34.2 million bushels, down 38 percent from 2021. Cotton production, at 840,000 bales, was up 22 percent from the previous year. Peanut production totaled 559 million pounds, down 8 percent from 2021. Soybean production, at 14.6 million bushels, was up 4 percent from 2021.

Florida: Corn for grain production in 2022 totaled 9.18 million bushels, down 21 percent from 2021. Cotton production, at 170,000 bales, was up 42 percent from the previous year. Peanut production totaled 554 million pounds, down 5 percent from 2021. Sugarcane for sugar and seed production, at 17.3 million tons, was up 1 percent from 2021.

Georgia: Corn for grain production in 2022 totaled 67.4 million bushels, down 17 percent from 2021. Cotton production, at 2.60 million bales, was up 18 percent from 2021. Peanut production, at 2.89 billion pounds, was down 13 percent from 2021. Soybean production, at 6.56 million bushels, was up 6 percent from the previous year. Tobacco production in 2022 totaled 12.6 million pounds, down 4 percent from 2021.

South Carolina: Corn for grain production in 2022 totaled 36.6 million bushels, down 31 percent from 2021. Cotton production, at 530,000 bales, was up 25 percent from the previous year. Peanut production, at 286 million pounds, was up 3 percent from 2021. The 2022 peanut yield of 4,200 pounds per acre represents a record high for South Carolina, tied with the previous year. Soybean production, at 14.4 million bushels, was down 1 percent from 2021. Tobacco production in 2022 totaled 11.6 million pounds, down 4 percent from 2021.
