COLUMBIA, Mo. — Each year, thousands of families flock to the South Farm Research Center (Columbia, Mo.) for the South Farm Showcase event. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Farm Showcase was canceled this year – along with the other University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) Agricultural Research Center in-person field day events.
Like the other Research Centers across the state, the South Farm Research Center will go virtual this year and will offer a handful of online, prerecorded presentations. The videos will be available via the Center’s website and Facebook page. The virtual field day will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
“South Farm Showcase is my favorite event to plan for, and it’s fun to see so many families enjoying themselves during the day,” said Tim Reinbott, assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. “It’s obviously disappointing to not be able to host the event this year. However, I’m excited to be part of the virtual field day season.”
The Center is still finalizing its speaker list, and plans on featuring timely topics related to agriculture and natural resources. There will be a wide range of topics from turf to turkeys and monarchs to maize, and will encompass a wide range of topics within CAFNR. Topics could change as the virtual field day approaches as well.
“We’re fortunate to be in close proximity with campus, allowing numerous CAFNR researchers to come out to the Research Center and conduct research,” Reinbott said. “We have some really interesting projects taking place out here, and we’re hoping to showcase some of that work.”
Individuals can find the presentations beginning around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, on the South Farm Research Center Facebook page (facebook.com/musouthfarm). Presentations will be posted throughout the morning. The videos will also be posted on a special webpage (southfarm.missouri.edu/field-
“I’m excited to have South Farm participate in the virtual field day season,” Reinbott said. “I’m hopeful our event will allow us to reach a new audience. I encourage individuals to tune in and stay engaged with the Center, especially through our Facebook page.”
