COLUMBIA, S.C. — According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in South Carolina, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday, October 3, 2021. Precipitation ranged from no rain to 1.9 inches. Average high temperatures ranged from the mid 70s to the low 90s. Average low temperatures ranged from the mid 50s to the low 70s.
Dry conditions and moderate temperatures benefitted crop development and most field activities proceeded unhindered. The corn harvest continued with above average yields reported in some areas. Some cotton defoliation was reported but there was only limited harvest activity underway at this time. Peanuts dug and harvested progressed in line with previous years, aided by the sunshine and dry air throughout the week. Soybeans have nearly completed setting pods but are still behind on dropping leaves.
Livestock and Pastures
Cattle remained in mostly good condition. Pastures received little rain, but cooler temperatures allowed them to remain in mostly good condition
