COLUMBIA, S.C. — According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service in South Carolina, there were 6.7 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday, October 6, 2019. Precipitation estimates for the state ranged from no rain to 2.0 inches. Average high temperatures ranged from the high 70s to the high 90s. Average low temperatures ranged from the low 60s to the mid 70s.
County Comments:
Continued lack of rain is becoming detrimental to pastures and soybeans. Premature leaf drop in soybeans was evident. Hay feeding was common because of the lack of grazing and declining pasture conditions.
Jay Crouch, Newberry County
Cotton harvest conditions continued to be excellent. Low humidity allowed longer harvest hours. Peanut harvest continued unabated with excellent drying conditions. Some digging concerns were reported because of extremely dry soils. Fields on heavy soils had to be irrigated before digging could continue.
Charles Davis, Calhoun County
Due to the dry weather conditions, harvest conditions were good. Non-irrigated vegetables took a hard hit. Without irrigation, farmers could not replant fall greens. Rains could help some soybeans, but it is too late for many crops.
Mark Nettles, Orangeburg County
The weather has been unusually hot and dry. Our fall crops will not be planted until we have some cool weather and rain.
