SONORA, Texas — The 81st annual Wool and Mohair Show will headline a host of youth events June 19-21 in the Sutton County 4-H Civic Center, 1700 N. Crockett St., Sonora.
Other highlights will include the 58th National 4-H Wool Judging and 18th FFA Wool Judging contests and a host of other ranch-related youth judging competitions.
Pascual Hernandez, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent in Sutton County, said all the activities are being conducted by his agency in cooperation with the Sonora Lions Club, Sonora Wool and Mohair Co. and the Sonora Chamber of Commerce.
“The Edwards Plateau region is unique in its ranch production practices, and we think it’s important for youth to be exposed to appropriate livestock production practices applicable to our area,” Hernandez said.
“Rangeland management skills and proper preparation of wool and mohair fleeces are among these. Our activities aim to hone these and other skills through these contests.”
Events will begin with the weighing and tagging of wool and mohair fleece entries at 10 a.m. June 19. All fleeces must be turned in to the 4-H Barn located directly behind the civic center no later than 3:30 p.m. that day.
Judging contest registration will start at 7 a.m. June 20. Livestock judging competition will begin at 8:15 a.m. that day, as will judging of the junior wool and mohair entries.
Range judging participants will travel from the civic center to the judging site at 10 a.m.
The day’s wool and mohair judging contest will begin at 1:30 p.m. June 20.
The national 4-H and FFA wool judging contests begin at 8 a.m. June 21.
The three days of activities will conclude with an 11:30 a.m. awards luncheon June 21 sponsored by the Sonora Lions Club and the Sonora Chamber of Commerce.
