PIGEON FALLS, Wis. — On August 17 UW Discovery Farms will host a free field day with lunch included on the Roger Rebout & Sons Farm from 12 pm to 3 pm in Janesville, WI. Brothers David, Doug and Dan Rebout operate 4,000 acres of corn and soybeans where they focus on precision agriculture, strip-till corn and no-till beans. The farm is part of the Discovery Farms core farm cluster project and has two edge-of-field water monitoring sites.
Farmers, crop consultants and industry professionals are invited to the Rebout farm for an afternoon of education and discussion on the following:
Water: The monitoring sites on the Rebout farm are the first UW Discovery Farms sites to monitor a grain-based system using commercial fertilizer and no manure. Hear results from the first two years of monitoring while checking out the monitoring site.
Big Data: Get your UAV (drone) and Big Data questions answered. UW-Madison Biological Systems Engineering Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist Brian Luck is actively doing research on Unmanned Arial Vehicle (UAV) Technology. He’ll explain in what ways UAVs and Big Data might be beneficial to agriculture and what the future for these tools looks like.
Soil: Dig in to the science of soil by stepping into a soil pit to participate in an interactive discussion on soil physical properties, texture, biology and more with Francisco Arriaga of UW Madison Soil Science and UW-Extension.
Learn about new opportunities from the Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI). Over the free lunch, Willie Hughes, a local farmer and PFI member, will highlight how he is working with PFI to understand the economic returns and water quality benefits of cover crops and small grains in a corn/soy rotation.
The August 17 field day will take place at 6401 West Mineral Point Road, Janesville, WI 53548 from 12 pm to 3 pm. The field day is free of charge and includes a noon meal. CEUs have been applied for. Please RSVP by August 10 for meal planning purposes to Savannah Williams at 715.983.5668 or will4653@umn.edu.
