ALBUQUERQUE — “Sustainability through Culture and Innovation” is a fitting theme for the Society for Range Management’s upcoming 75th Annual Meeting, to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 6 – 10. The conference will include plenary sessions, symposia, ignite (short talk) sessions, and workshops throughout the week, along with a special “Producer’s Day” on Tuesday. The meeting aims to connect land managers, scientists, agricultural producers, and non-profit members with innovative research, new networks, and real-life skills to advance science-based management across rangelands.
The meeting will begin with headliner plenary speakers Dr. Nathan Sayre, Professor of Geography at the University of California-Berkeley, whose research focuses on political economy and environmental history of semi-arid rangelands and Dr. Shelemia Nyamuryekung’e a researcher concentrating on animal-plant and climate interactions to achieve sustainable production in extensive cattle ranching systems of the southwest. Native to New Mexico, U.S. Secretary of Interior Deb Haaland is invited to speak at the Plenary, as well as U.S. Farm Service Administrator Zach Ducheneaux.
Tuesday, February 8 will be “Producer’s Day” featuring the 5th Bud Williams Memorial Stockmanship Symposium, the “Stockmanship and Stewardship” Producer Forum, a Rancher Panel Roundtable and Low Stress livestock handling demo. This day will include a special one-day rate of $50 extended to producers.
The meeting also includes a tradeshow, local artisan fair, student competitions, and awards ceremony to recognize the premier leaders in land stewardship and research in the field of rangeland management. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore Albuquerque by partaking in Pueblo, ranch, museum and missile range tours as well. There are several socials and networking events including both a job fair and the annual “Bridging the Gap” event which connects career professionals with those early in their careers.
An extensive session list offers topics ranging from fire, outcome-based grazing, range monitoring, drought planning, and ranch enterprise sustainability to beef supply chains, co-production, precision grazing technologies, forage production, and invasive species – an agenda sure to inform academia, range professionals, and producers alike.
