CAMDEN, Del. — Two Smyrna Middle School students were among the winners of the Delaware Farm Bureau’s “Ag in the Classroom” essay contest.
Alexia Inhof, a seventh grader, won first place among middle school students, while third place went to Farrah Charles, also a seventh grader.
Inhof received a prize of $300, while Charles received $100.
Their teacher, Stefanie Freimuth, was presented with a Staples gift card.
Second place prize of $200 went to Allison Aquino, a seventh grade student of Debbie Kirk at Louis L. Redding Middle School in Middletown. Kirk was also presented with a Staples gift card.
Students were challenged to write about careers in agriculture, Delaware’s No. 1 industry, and to describe their favorite of the many agricultural jobs in the state. Some of the careers mentioned were agricultural communicators, ag educators, veterinary technicians, plant breeders, dairymen, florists, accountants, engineers, agronomist, crop advisor, salesmen, food inspector and crop farmers.
The contest was organized by the Delaware Farm Bureau’s Promotion and Education Committee.
This year, the committee expanded the “Ag in the Classroom” essay contest to include ninth and 10th graders. First place winner at the high school level was William Penn ninth grader Aaron Jeffery, who received $300. Second place and $200 went to Cameron Curran, a 10th grader, also from William Penn High School. Their teacher, Karen Ferrucci, received a Staples gift card.
