MINNEAPOLIS — In this installment of the Gopher Coffee Shop podcast, Extension educators Ryan Miller and Brad Carlson sit down with Jochum Wiersma, University of Minnesota Extension Small Grain Specialist. Jochum was trained in plant breeding under Dr. Bob Busch and started with Extension as a small grains specialist in Crookston during the scab years of the early 1990’s. Jochum talks about the history of small grain production in the state of Minnesota and some of the often overlooked opportunities for small grain production. We talked about benefits from growing a small grain, yield potentials, and some of Jochum’s most recent work with hybrid rye and barley variety testing. Enjoy!
