CAMDEN, Del. — The 5K Milk Run/Walk scheduled for May 12 at the Middletown High School in Middletown, Del., does not require runners to balance a glass of milk without spilling, but involves attendees with a heart for hungry children helping raise money for a great cause.
The 6th annual 5K Milk Run/Walk will be hosted by the Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation and the New Castle County Farm Bureau, with all net proceeds going to The Ministry of Caring’s “Milk for Children Fund” and Neighborhood House, Inc.
The Ministry of Caring serves nutritious meals in its three Emmanuel Dining rooms at no cost to needy and hungry men, women and children. Over 14,000 meals are served yearly to children, starting with a glass of milk. The Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation wants to ensure that each child continues to receive that valuable nutrition.
The Neighborhood House assists families and individuals in meeting their immediate basic needs in crisis situations while helping them become more stable going forward.
Last year’s event proved to be very successful despite the rain, and families helped generate awareness of this need for milk in our own communities. The event was attended by state and local officials, as well as a significant cross-section from the agricultural community.
Organizers hope to continue to exceed the accomplishments of years past and the funds raised by doubling the number of runners and families that attend. During the past five years, the event has donated enough money to purchase nearly 360,000 half-pints (8 ounces) of milk. In 2018, the public will be encouraged to attend, to learn about dairies and agriculture, all while supporting this great cause. Local sponsors will be providing refreshments and snacks at the event.
To sign up to participate in the race, visit www.races2run.com and find the race by date. Registration starts at 8 a.m. on race day, May 12, in the Middletown High School parking lot. T-shirts are guaranteed for all who pre-register online.
The Delaware Farm Bureau established the Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation in 2013 to build awareness, understanding and positive public perception about Delaware’s farm operations and fresh local food. The foundation also raises funds to provide educational materials, grants, scholarships and to feed hungry Delawareans.
The Foundation providing milk for needy children is a perfect match. Even if you cannot attend the race, please considering joining this worthy cause by making a donation to help continue to provide milk for children. Donations may be made through the races2run website (click “donate now” at left), or checks payable to Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, may be sent to 3457 S. DuPont Highway, Camden DE 19934. Please write “Milk Run” in the memo space.
