RALEIGH, N.C. — Oak trees down in the storm? Once the danger is past, consider inviting friends over to innoculate shitake mushroom logs.
Freshly cut White and Red oak are two of the top choices for growing shitake and several other varieties of mushrooms.
Logs 3-7″ in diameter and three feet long should be inoculated within 15 to 30 days of felling.
There may be mushroom growing experts in the neighborhood who would be willing to lead a hands-on workshop. All you need are logs, a drill, mushroom spore, and wax.
