WILBERFORCE, Ohio — Designed for beginning farmers, Central State University Extension (CSUE) is partnering with H.O.O.V.E.S in presenting a Sheep Shearing Field Day beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, at the H.O.O.V.E.S facility, 4055 Wilkins Rd., Swanton, Ohio.
Participants at the field day will:
- Learn how to shear a sheep
- Learn how to protect the quality of the fleece while shearing
- Learn how to skirt the fleece
- Learn how to wash the fleece
Presenters will include CSUE Agriculture/Natural Resources Educator Phil Hollingshead and CSUE Agriculture/Natural Resources Educator Michelle Wallace.
Learning to properly shear sheep can help producers save money rather than outsourcing to shearing services, Wallace said. Annual shearing is important to the health of the flock, and producers with smaller numbers of ewes may find it more cost effective to shear their own flocks.
For the shearing demonstration, Central State University Extension is partnering with H.O.O.V.E.S, a non-profit livestock farm that provides outreach and utilizes holistic approaches to restore the health and wellness of veterans and their families. In addition to sheep, the farm also has horses and other animals.
The sheep shearing field day is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Wallace at mwallace@CentralState.edu.
