ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of Minnesota Extension will host a timely sheep/goat marketing webinar on Tuesday, March 29, starting at 6:30 pm. Sheep and goat producers, 4-H and FFA members, and consumers of lamb and goat meat are invited to attend to learn more about current industry dynamics and pricing.
“Sheep and goat prices have been rewarding to producers in recent years,” says Travis Hoffman, NDSU and UMN Extension sheep specialist. “Regional sheep/goat market leaders will provide insight into the current and future outlook of small ruminant production and marketing.”
Jeremy Schafer, manager at the Central Livestock Association/Zumbrota Livestock Auction House, will provide an overview of marketing sheep and goats through Central Livestock, which is a hub of southern Minnesota small ruminant commerce. Justin Lumpkin, USDA Agricultural Market Service, and his team accurately report daily/weekly prices and provide transparency at the auction barns in South Dakota and North Dakota.
Fred Krueger owns and operates a ND state-inspected harvest facility specializing in sheep and goat slaughter and fabrication and will provide insight into non-traditional and ethnic marketing options. Trevor VanWell operates VanWell Livestock LLC, Watertown, SD and will provide a history and perspective on sheep supply and lamb demand as a northern plains regional market leader.
USDA sheep and goat market reports are available at: https://www.ams.usda.gov/market-news/sheep-reports or https://www.ams.usda.gov/market-news/goat-reports. “Producers have found sheep and goat production a profitable venture,” says Hoffman. “Equally important, American consumers are increasing their consumption of lamb and goat at their own family dinner table. In 2022, marketing is key.”
