TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — September 2021 marks the 14th year Feeding America has recognized Hunger Action Month. Feeding America is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization and has a nationwide network of 200 food banks, including Feeding Florida’s 12 network food banks. This year’s campaign presents the impossible choices that millions of Americans must make between food and other basic needs, like rent, electricity, and medicine.
The issue of food insecurity is persistent and affects nearly 3.1 million Floridians. Nearly 21% of those are children. Hunger Action Month highlights the issue throughout September, but Feeding Florida food banks work year-round in all 67 counties, providing food assistance and access to nutritious fruits and vegetables.
“Hunger is a symptom of an under-resourced household,” said Robin Safley, Executive Director of Feeding Florida. “Families and individuals facing food insecurity are also facing tough choices to cut back other costs and stretch every penny. No one should have to choose between their healthcare and putting food on the table. This is why our food banks work with the community and agencies to provide access to healthy food 365 days a year, in addition to connecting these families with other partners.”
During the month of September, Floridians can get involved in the hunger movement by learning, committing, and speaking up about ways to end hunger.
- LEARN more about hunger and where it is in Florida, review research on Feeding Florida’s website, or connect with their local food bank.
- COMMIT to the cause by pledging to donate to their area food bank, volunteering their time, or purchasing the Imagine Tag specialty license plate.
- SPEAK UP for the cause- it’s as easy as reaching out to their local elected official, State Representative, or Congressman and urging them to join the fight against hunger.
Hunger Action Month is a time to mobilize to end hunger, especially at the local level. Find your local food bank and then learn more by visiting www.feedingflorida.org.
